The Foundation IRCCS Istituto Nazionale Neurologico Carlo Besta, INNCB, is a national and international referral point in the fields of neurology, neurosurgery and neuroscience. It carries out research on child neurology, epilepsy, neuro-oncology, neuro-rehabilitation, public health and disability, genetic diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, neuromuscular and neurodegenerative disorders.

The Neurology, Public Health and Disability unit of the Scientific Direction is engaged in the implementation at national and international level of the ICF as well as in the development of strategic planning and policy development in the fields of public health and disability for the EU, for Italian Ministries of Health and Welfare and for regional authorities. It supports the Italian Federation of Neurological Associations (FIAN). Since 2007 it has been a WHO Collaborating Centre Research Branch.

Main tasks: INNCB will lead WP4, being responsible for three focus groups with patients with epilepsy, migraine and Parkinson’s Disease; reviewing the European literature on epilepsy and migraine; implementing the harmonized protocol for documenting psychosocial difficulties associated with epilepsy, migraine and Parkinson’s Disease in clinical settings; training in the train the trainer course; identifying experts for the Expert meeting in WP3 and the Final conference in WP6; and contributing to dissemination activities.

Previous experiences relevant to these tasks: INNCB has wide experience in the coordination of national and international projects in policy development, public health and disability research (e.g. EU MHADIE and EU-MURINET projects); the coordination of international and national research on statistics and collection of health and disability data (e.g. EU COURAGE in Europe project); the evaluation of the burden of brain disorders both in terms of disability and research needs; experience and knowledge of ICF and its utilization in statistics, education, rehabilitation and clinical settings for cross-sectional and longitudinal surveys and in policy support.

Dr. Matilde Leonardi

MD, Neurologist, paediatrician, expert in bioethics.

Worked at INNCB since 2001. WHO staff member in Geneva 1991-1995 and collaborating with WHO as an expert and as WHO-FIC Implementation Committee co-chair. She is head of the Neurology, Public Health and Disability Unit of INNCB, EBC-WHO liaison, and consultant for the Italian Ministries of Health and Welfare. Dr Leonardi is the coordinator of several Italian and European projects and author of several publications in the fields of neurology, disability, public health and policy development. She is co-chair of the WHO-ICF children working group. She is Professor of Neurology, Disability and Public Health at the degree course in Counselling for Disability and Marginality and co-chair of the Master of Science in Disability Management at the Catholic University of Milan.
